RE Systems Group, Inc. (RSG) was formed in 1984 to provide the reinsurance and insurance industries with a new generation of low cost, flexible and state-of-the-art software packages. Market analysis at the time showed that all of the available packaged software was based on high cost, inflexible and dated programming languages which required very expensive computers.
RSG's business plan in 1984 for the development of its first product (The RSG Treaty Reinsurance System) contained the following criteria:
Using the above criteria, a team of data processing professionals was assembled to develop RSG's first system. The team included programming and database specialists who were trained in the most modern software tools and also reinsurance systems analysts who had a great deal of experience in designing reinsurance systems.
Using the most advanced relational database available, and the lengthy prior reinsurance design experience of the analysts, a design was completed that when implemented, would extend RSG's technology beyond all current reinsurance systems including packages from vendors and all known in-house developed systems.
At this point (before program development) RSG was chosen by a newly formed reinsurance company (F&G Re) to be their reinsurance systems vendor. F&G Re provided a great deal of extremely professional assistance during the programming and installation of the system at its site. The programming effort was completed in 1985 and the system was installed at F&G Re early in 1986.
RSG began to market the system in 1986 and was received by the reinsurance community with great enthusiasm. Within a few years the system became the industry's leading package with over 35 reinsurance customers operating on personal, mini and mainframe computers.
Since its inception, RSG has continued to enhance the system - both on a system wide basis and on a per customer basis. Some of the many enhancements added include the famous "RDI" Statistical Display module, Annocat and automated faxing.
Requests from customers and potential customers caused RSG to begin development in 1988 of a Property and Casualty Facultative Reinsurance System at a customer's site. Again, using virtually the same criteria as used in the Treaty system development, RSG designed and programmed the Facultative system and performed the initial installation in 1989. The Facultative system has proven to be an extremely efficient business tool allowing the customers to process the high overhead associated with facultative business at a very low cost.
Based on our success in the reinsurance industry, RSG was chosen by one of the USA's leading reinsurance intermediaries to develop a system for them that would be comprehensive in nature and provide a very efficient operational environment. Based on an in-depth analysis of the business, a new system design was completed that gives the reinsurance broker industry its first truly interactive, on-line data processing system. This multi-year project (completed early in 1992) is the first American designed full featured system alternative for the intermediary.
A key ingredient to RSG's success in installing its packages has been our ability to convert the customer's existing system to RSG in a fast and economical manner. The majority of our conversions have been accomplished in less than two months and by one RSG analyst! The keys to our success in this area are a well trained staff, an easily customizable system and an extremely flexible relational database. One should compare the economies here with other vendors' conversions that usually entail man-years of effort and very high cost. An additional by-product of our conversion experience is that RSG now has automated conversion software for most of our competitors packages which further reduces the effort involved.
RSG's highly trained staff (our employees average experience in the reinsurance/insurance industry is almost 8 years) have been utilized extensively by our customers for consulting tasks. Some of the areas where RSG can supply consulting services include: system analysis and design, networking, programming, documentation, project management, technical training (in RSG products and systems), and operational support. We even have a Reinsurance Seminar that we offer for our customers' data processing personnel.
